What Be Yer Favorite Rum?
I was recently sailing through the western Caribbean when I stumbled upon a new rum called Pyrat Rum XO Reserve. At the time I had been drinking something else so I didn't get a chance to give it a try but the other day I picked up a bottle of the stuff at my local rum store.
The first thing I did when I got home was to open it up and pour a glass. The color was amber. In the nose I got orange, caramel, and spices. The taste was extremely complex, creamy and rich starting with big sweet orange citrus flavor, changing to fruit and roasted spices as it moves back over the tongue. As it was about 30 degrees outside, it was a welcome warming sensation and I was very pleased by the wonderful taste and complexity of the rum.
As it turns out, Pyrat Rum comes from the creators of Patron, makers of the some of the finest Tequila in the world. They tell of how the Pyrat XO Reserve Rum is made from a blend of nine unique Caribbean rums aged up to 15 years in Limousin oak and American sweet oak barrels. They say it has a toasted apricot amber color and offers flavors of vanilla, caramel, honey and cinnamon with an extremely smooth but gentle palette texture to keep it soft to the taste.
The bottle is an individually numbered, hand-crafted decanter decorated with a Hoti which represents the Zen patron saint and protector of fortunetellers and bartenders.
Recommended serving methods include:
- Neat in a snifter with a lemon twist
- On the rocks with a wedge of lime
- With your favorite cola or juice on the rocks
Coming in around $36.00 this is a pretty pricey bottle of rum but well worth it in my mind. This is rum to be enjoyed, one sip at a time and unlike any other rum I have ever tried. It's smooth taste boasts sophistication while it's complex character explodes with flavor in your mouth. I can't wait to enjoy a snifter with my favorite cigar next weekend!
